These phrasewords speak volumes, and yet are nothing but sorry excuses to conceal the one word that fits the bill for the justification of these deeds - 'Ambition'.
'Greed', 'Resolve', and even blatant 'Desire' are sheer corollary byproducts - and can be defined as tributary words of that One Word which manages to sum it all up. Long before the word Ambition had been spoken through the lips of a man for the first time, even before mankind had comprehended its meaning in their primeval 'brains', or appreciated its limitless possibilities and capabilities, they found its essence coursing through their very veins. And as we have evolved over the years, although the aforementioned meaning has been derived and forgotten several times over, the same blood our ancestors lives on, pulsing and pounding in our own flesh, gallons spewed by the hour by our very own hearts.
Ambition has always been (and will continue to be for the countless eons that mankind is fated to plunder and poison the world) the catalyst of the greatest feats and inventions generated, as of the most horrifying misdeeds and atrocities committed, but rarely has it been used as a pretext for them. It has levelled and raped monumental empires, and turned infinitesimal scavenging hamlets into pompously cosmic civilizations, only to topple and crumble to the ashes once again. But so has it endowed us with the 'necessities' that are a must for any civilized being - 'electricity', 'federal systems' and suchlike.
Ambition is the one most potent driving force, and a mean coveted like no other. Coupled thus with itself, in either the right hands or the wrong ones, it can provide perpetual horizons, or more aptly 'opportunities'. Note that the motives, means and opportunities here are not the cheap ingredients of lowly butlers and vengeful ex-wives - suspects - in substandard detective novels. This is in fact the formula for success (used literally and not relatively here), for on close observation you may notice that all accomplished people must pass through these three stages - Ambition, in short - before attaining success.
Ambition is synonymous with the word 'Confidence', for when a person loses his confidence, he loses his ambition, with it any motive, mean or opportunity to regain what he has lost, and thus automatically all hopes of triumphing 'against all odds'. That is when he falls into that ordinary, endless rut that depresses and destroys extraordinary people in all entirety. It makes them 'babus' - lifeless zombies bent upon pursuing one monotonous scheduled routine day by day for all of their short eternity.
All in all, ambition may make Gods in their Elysiums or break promising young minds under its careless feet, to walk on unchallenged and oblivious.

[Found a mistake in the post? Clashing/contradictory views on the subject? I try to be as meticulous as possible, but nobody's perfect - even though I do come close. My opinions are pretty vague, and yours may differ (hey, its a free world).
